WAGENINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS — The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands is testing a concept of building artificial floating islands to expand the amount liveable space available for the country’s growing population. The island is made up of large floating triangles that connect to each other in a flexible fashion. It could measure 5 km wide. “As sea level rises, cities become overcrowded and more activities are carried out at sea, raising the dikes and reclaiming land from the seas are perhaps no longer an effective solution,” Olaf Waals, project manager of MARIN's floating islands told New Atlas. The floating space could be used for housing and public infrastructures and support renewable energy systems such as wind and solar energy farms. It is still unknown how the floating mega structure could withstand winds and currents and how does living on the island affect the people. When Buckminster Fuller conceived of the geodesic dome in the 1940s he was intrigued by the efficiency of a super-lightweight structure that gets stronger as it gets bigger. He designed a version of it to cover an unfolding home (“Standard of Living Package”; 1948). In 1960 he came up with a plan to build a dome over Manhattan to better regulate air quality and microclimates. In 1963, he was asked by the U.S. Information Agency to design the United States pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. His “biosphere” was his largest geodesic dome: a 20-storey-high skeleton of steel polyhedrons sheathed in a transparent skin composed of acrylic panels. To regulate the indoor ambient temperature, Fuller designed an apparatus of mobile triangular panels that would move over the inner surface of the dome following the sun. Likely too advanced for its time, it was replaced with a system of valves that enabled the pavilion to "breathe." Buckminster Fuller was a mostly self-taught futurist who worked in mathematics, engineering, environmental science, architecture, and art. Before the oil crisis of the ‘70s or the space race, Fuller tinkered with new ways of designing homes and vehicles that might help conserve resources. Fuller looked to nature for inspiration: the geodesic design is similar to organisms like the fractal-like, double-radiating pattern of dandelion seed heads. Fuller’s term tensegrity - a portmanteau of "tensional integrity" - describes the inherent strength of his "omnitriangulated" geodesic domes; since the tension-bearing members map out the shortest paths between adjacent members these type of structures offer the maximum strength with the least materials. Simon purchased it for $5000 CAD after it had been sitting in the same spot for 12 years (looking back he probably wouldn't have paid that much for it!). To transform the boat to a fully electric sailboat, Simon removed the diesel engine and replaced it with an HP EV AC 12 kW engine, and installed 16 x 330 Watt solar panels (5280 Watts total), and nearly 20 kW hours of lithium battery power. He also plans to add an equivalent amount of wind turbines on the boat for days and seasons when there's less sun. And of course, he'll eventually have some sails and a couple of telescoping masts. The living space inside the boat includes 4 berths, a mechanical room, a head bathroom with a washing machine, a massive galley, two cockpits (yet to be built), and a settee lounge area. Outside there's a great back deck and eventually there will be a space to lounge up front as well.
